Driving to Jaisalmer had been on my bucket list forever. This time, I finally decided to turn it into reality and planned a Solo Road Trip to Jaisalmer. Little did I know that the journey itself would be the highlight of my trip!
The Magic of Sand Dunes and Rain
The road to Jaisalmer was pure magic. Sand dunes lined both sides, creating a golden wonderland. I always imagined them under the bright sun, but seeing them in the rain was something else. Yes, it was raining! The drizzle gave the dunes a soft shimmer, and the contrast of wet earth and golden sand was simply breathtaking. Kids waved at me as I drove past, their smiles lighting up the cloudy day. It felt heartwarming and personal, like a silent connection. Moments like these are what make road trips so special.
Exploring Jaisalmer: Gadisar Lake and Bada Bagh
Once in Jaisalmer, my first stop was Gadisar Lake. The calm water surrounded by intricate ghats looked like a painting. Later, I visited Bada Bagh, a peaceful spot with cenotaphs set against the desert. The sight of the chhatris against the open sky was mesmerising, so much history and solitude in one place.
The View from Jaisalmer Fort
Jaisalmer Fort, also known as the Living Fort, is unlike any other. As I climbed to the top, I couldn’t help but marvel at how life still thrives within its golden sandstone walls. Unlike most forts that stand as monuments of the past, this one is alive with bustling lanes, homes, shops, and cafes.
Standing atop the fort, the view was absolutely breathtaking. The entire golden city unfolded before me, with its maze of narrow lanes, intricately designed havelis, and glowing sandstone buildings. Even under the rain-laden skies, the sight was magical; a blend of history and everyday life that’s unique to Jaisalmer.
Walking through the fort’s lanes was like stepping into a living museum. I stumbled upon artisans crafting beautiful souvenirs, locals sharing stories of the fort’s legacy, and travellers soaking in the heritage vibe. The energy was vibrant yet calming, a rare combination that made this experience unforgettable.
For anyone visiting Jaisalmer, the Living Fort isn’t just a place to see, it’s a world to experience. Whether it’s watching the sunrise from its ramparts, exploring its ancient architecture, or simply enjoying a cup of chai with a view, this fort captures the essence of Jaisalmer in the most authentic way.
The Drive to Longewala: A Personal Favourite
Early the next morning, I headed out towards the Longewala Border. The hotel staff thoughtfully packed me breakfast, which was a sweet gesture. The drive to Longewala was, hands down, my best experience. The road was smooth, flanked by majestic windmills and rolling sand dunes that looked even better in the rain. On the way, I stopped at a roadside tea stall. The chaiwala, curious about my solo trip, told me how rare it was for a woman to travel alone in this area. His words about how “fearlessly” I traveled made me smile and feel proud.
A High-Energy Visit to Tanot Mata Temple
Visiting Tanot Mata Temple was another unforgettable moment. The energy there was electrifying. Seeing uniformed army men visiting the temple with such faith was inspiring. It made me feel a deep sense of respect and connection to the place.
Stay at Taj Gorbandh Palace: A Memorable Experience
During my Jaisalmer trip, I stayed at Gorbandh Palace, and I couldn’t be happier with my choice. From the moment I walked in, the staff’s friendly demeanor made me feel right at home.
